Notes
Sinah-ı Kebair is Zahir Bigiyev's second novel. The novel was first published as a Tatar text with Arabic letters in Kazan in 1890. Bigiyev was a young madrasah student in Kazan when he wrote Sinah-ı Kebair. Sinah-ı Kebair is accepted by the press as a work that brought innovation to literature in terms of its subject and language. The novel begins with the story of Gabdülgaffur, who was sent to the madrasah in Kazan for education. At the end of three years, Gabdülgaffur acquires bad friends and habits in the madrasah. He is expelled from the madrasa and starts living with a bad person named Memet. Gabdülgaffur's story and Mahrûy's story intersect at one point. Mahrûy, a young woman, begins to secretly meet with Yakup Galiyev, who does not have a good reputation, while her husband Cihangir goes to Siberia for trade. After a while, Mahrûy learns that she is pregnant and gives birth secretly at an old woman's house. She does not consent to the baby being given to an orphanage or left at a doorstep, and asks the old woman to take care of her baby. On the woman's advice, he meets with Yakup Galiyev, who has not seen him for a long time, to ask him for money. It is not explained in the work how this meeting took place. It is stated that Yakup Galiyev died and Mahrûy was responsible for this. Mahrûy tells what happened in the court. Yakup Galiyev's brother, İbrahim Galiyev, finds the old woman Mahrûy described in court. He scares the woman by saying that if she confirms Mahrûy in court, she will also receive a prison sentence. He asks her to get rid of the baby and deny Mahrûy. When the old woman denies Mahrûy in court, Mahrûy is convicted. On his return journey, Cihangir hears about a young woman who committed murder in Kazan, where he stays. When he returns to Kazan, Mahrûy is not at home. Cihangir learns from the servant in the building where the old woman lives that what Mahrûy said is true. İbrahim Galiyev learns that the servant will testify in court and gives money to Memet to prevent this. He has made Memet do bad things before in exchange for money. Memet and Gabdülgaffur kill the servant. Meanwhile, Gabdülgaffur receives a letter from his father. His father is upset when he hears that his son was expelled from the madrasah and wants his son to return to the village. The letter makes Gabdülgaffur cry in regret. Memet comes up with the idea of finding some money, escaping to Istanbul and starting a new life there. Two friends are caught stealing from the church. From the note found in Memet's pocket, it is understood that İbrahim Galiyev wanted him to kill the servant. Ibrahim Galiyev is also imprisoned. Meanwhile, Mahrûy, who got sick from sadness in prison, gets worse. When he sees that his heart has stopped, he says that he is dead and is taken to be buried. The ground is frozen and it is almost evening, they leave Mahrûy there to bury him the next day. A few hours later, Mahrûy wakes up from a deep sleep and regains consciousness. He goes home from the cemetery without being seen by anyone. Those who return the next day to complete the work they left unfinished cannot find the body where they left it. Because they are afraid of being imprisoned, they close the grave and do not tell anyone that Mahrûy's body has disappeared. In the twenty-sixth chapter, which is the last and shortest chapter of the novel, information is given about the current situation of the characters. About Mahrûy and Cihangir: "There was no choice for them to stay in Kazan, so they disappeared from Kazan. But where they went, to which city and in what way they went was so secret that the author of the novel Sinah-ı Kebair was not known either." Memet, Gabdülgaffur and İbrahim Galiyev manage to escape from prison. The author ends the novel by saying that he will explain what happened to these three people who escaped in his next novel called Apostate. The feature of the traditional realist novel reflecting the bad, ugly, shameful and immoral aspects of life and people, as well as the good sides, constitutes the basis of Sinah-ı Kebair. In Sinah-ı Kebair, evil, immoral, weak-willed, sinful characters and the disasters that occur because of the behavior of these characters are described. In this respect, the novel is almost a mirror of instruction for the readers. In the work, the narrator makes his presence known, as in traditional folk tales. From time to time, he intervenes and whispers to the reader what the reader needs to know. Descriptions of people are not detailed. Places are included in the work only by mentioning their names. Even though the criminals are caught and imprisoned, they manage to escape. Even though the criminals are not punished at the end of the work, the work does not lose its cautionary tale for people.
