About: Fine (though acephalous) copy of al-Jārabardī's (d.1346) commentary on Ibn al-Ḥājib's (d. 1249) celebrated manual of morphology (ṣarf or taṣrīf), al-Shāfīyah. | Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 619
Origin: As appears in colophon on p.390, copied by Ḥaṣan ibn Ṣāliḥ ibn Aḥmad, in al-Madrasah al-Ḥājjīyah [?] (المدرسة الحاجية) in the buqʻah (بقعة) of Bitlis (بدليس) [?] with transcription (tansīkh) completed 27 Dhū al-Qaʻdah 930 [ca. 26 September 1524].
Accompanying materials: a. Acquisitions slip from Yahuda. -- b. Inventory cataloguing slip in hand of Winifred Smeaton Thomas.
Former shelfmark: From inner front cover and spine label, "IL 202" (likely supplied by Yahuda, see acquisitions slip).
Binding: Pasteboards covered in dark teal cloth ; Western-style binding (not original) ; board linings in wove paper ; resewn and very tightly bound ; stuck-on endbands in blue and white stripe ; overall in fairly good condition with some abrasion, staining, lifting of cloth, etc.
Support: European laid paper with 11 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 30-32 mm. apart (horizontal), and bull's head watermark (pole and five-petalled flower above, see p.10, 16, etc.), dense and sturdy though crisp, well-burnished.
Decoration: Keywords and abbreviation symbols rubricated ; textual dividers in the form of inverted commas in red ; text being commented upon (matn al-Shāfiyah) overlined in red.
Script: Naskh-nastaʻlīq (talik) ; elegant Eastern Turkish [?] hand ; virtually serifless and quite rounded with curvilinear descenders (many sweeping), slight effect of words descending to baseline (occasionally more exaggerated), pointing in strokes rather than distinct dots, freely ligatured, kāf mashqūqah preferred (even final kāf) with shaqq sweeping upward.
Layout: Written in 17 lines per page ; frame-ruled.
Collation: Chiefly quinions ; now so tightly bound, virtually impossible to discern original gatherings without damaging or disbinding ; leaf carrying incipit page missing ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization.
Colophon: "Scribal," triangular, reads "فرغت يدا احقر عباد الله الصمد حسن بن صالح بن احمد عن تنسيخ هذه النسخة الچارپرديدية ضحوة يوم الثلثاء السابع والعشرين من ذي القعدة سنة ثلثين وتسعمائة ببقعة بدليس [؟] صينت من آفات التلبيس في المدرسة الحاجية على صاحبها الرحمة م"
Explicit: "بمعناها في الغاية والانتهاء ومن الله البداية واليه النهاية"
Incipit: "لم يترك في حوزة المكارم السنية مكانا لالا وحق له قول من قال لقد ذلت سبل المعاني وفاق الخلق طرا بالبيان"

On recto of opening leaf (fol.1a/p.1), ownership statement dated 1316 [1898 or 9] in name of Ḥasan ibn [?] Muḥammad al-Rizq Ḥamawī [?], accompanied by circular seal impression (repeated twice), statement reads "ملكه الفقير اليه تعالى حسن ابن محمد الرزق حموي [؟] سنة ١۳۱٦" and seal impression reads "حسن الرزق ١٣١٤" (compare statements in Isl. Ms. 500, 615, 623) ; marginal corrections.
