Notes
This is only part of it. It contains seventeen translations of Al-Hilyah, starting with the translation of Muhammad Ibn al-Hanafiyya, which is the two hundred and thirty-fourth translation, and ending with the translation of Wahb bin Munabbih, which is the two hundred and fiftieth translation. Thus, it occupies about the last half of the third printed part, and a little of the beginning of the fourth part. It is, as its author described it in its preamble, “a book that includes the names of a group, some of their hadiths, and their words from the eminent scholars of the Sufis and their imams, and the arrangement of their classes of ascetics and their proof, from the century of the Companions, the Successors, and their followers, and those after them who knew the evidence and facts, and practiced conditions and methods.” Its author completed it, as stated in its conclusion, in Dhul-Hijjah in the year 422 AH. He begins by defining the characteristics of the saints and their virtues, then talks about Sufism and the Sufis, the types of their speech, their rituals and their attributes. Then he opens the subject of his book by talking about the four caliphs, followed by a group of the greatest companions such as Talha bin Ubaid Allah, Al-Zubayr bin Al-Awwam, Saad bin Abi Waqqas, Abd al-Rahman bin Awf and others. After them, he mentions a group of famous women, led by Mrs. Fatima al-Zahra, daughter of the Messenger, Aisha al-Siddiqiyya, wife of the Messenger, Asma’ bint Abi Bakr, and others. Then he goes on to mention the rest of the great companions and followers, and after them the great saints, ascetics, and Sufis, respectively, but without chronological or alphabetical order. He does not pay much attention to the historical aspect, and he rarely mentions the date of birth or death, but he pays special attention to the personal characteristics of piety and asceticism, and to the narrated hadiths and famous sayings emanating from those whom he mentions. He is also concerned with the chains of transmission and goes on at length. This book was mentioned or found in: Brockelmann: S.I. 617_ G.I. 362.
