Notes This book is considered an encyclopedia not only about the city of Baghdad, but also about Iraq with its cities, tribes, monasteries, mosques, and other urban, cultural, social, political, geographic, and economic matters, although some focus appears on the city of Baghdad. Sabah Mahmoud Al-Halabi in Al-Mawrid magazine, the issue referred to above. The last part is his saying, “And from what I learned of this history after it was bound,” in which he mentioned part of the incident of the fall of Baghdad at the hands of the Mongols, an overview of the caliphs of the Abbasids, and another overview of the Baghdad clans contemporary with him, without a specific historical context. This addition occupies (8) pages. It appears from the author’s sermon that he wanted this book to be a general knowledge circle about the city of Baghdad and its region, so that he would talk about its history, its scholars, and its mosques, all under one title, which is “News of Baghdad and its neighboring countries.” But he did not continue - it seems - in implementing this plan, because after he had gone a long way in writing the first part of the book (which this manuscript represents), he left it without completion, and proceeded to write an independent book about the scholars of Baghdad. The title of her books is “Al-Musk Al-Adhafar” and another book about the mosques of Baghdad “And He Will Come”. Thus, each of the last two books has the title of an independent description, except for the first section, which, due to its lack of a specific title, was called the general book, and it appears from the description of this manuscript section that the author did not complete it, or - at least - did not reach its final form. I wrote their addresses in red.
Sample Text The poor man says to God Almighty, Mahmoud Shukri bin Abdullah Al-Husseini Al-Alusi Al-Baghdadi, may God be good to him and accept his work and grant him success for the good of both worlds and cherish his hope: Praise be to [God], Lord of the worlds, and the end is for the righteous, and may God’s blessings be upon our master Muhammad, the Seal of the Prophets, and upon his family and companions and those who follow them in righteousness until the Day of Judgment. But after that, the art of history is a useful art, an example for those who consider it, a sermon for those who think and gain insight from everyone who benefits, and by it one knows what happened to creation to the point that the world has expanded through it. His age is true, and one of the most important things is knowing what happened to the country and what happened to him. From the hands of accidents and temptations, especially our homeland, the abode of peace, the dome of Islam, and the seat of the honorable caliphs. The days have passed over it, and most of the people of this country are isolated from knowing the news of their homeland and learning about what happened to their country and their home. So I loved to intrude on those little ones, in the virginity of what happened to this country since it entered the possession of Islam, and to explain the reason that necessitated taking precautions in the city of peace, and identifying the deserts of Iraq and defining some of its famous countries in the thousands, and what was in it. Of the palaces, houses and buildings that have withstood the shocks of time. Then he praised the statement of what Baghdad has become today and what it contains in our time of the glorified and virtuous fathers, ascetics, and famous elders in the country. Then he followed that by explaining the mosques, schools, and temples in Baghdad, asking God Almighty for help.
