Notes A typewritten volume consisting of 266 pages and an index of its contents on seven manuscript pages. It is a comprehensive translation of the life of the late Sultan Moulay bin Muhammad bin Youssef (Muhammad V). The author begins by mentioning his birth in the year 1327 AH, his upbringing and marriage, then his ascension to the throne of Morocco in Jumada al-Awwal 1346 AH (November 1927). Then he describes his scientific, religious and moral upbringing, his interest in organizing the Al-Qarawiyyin treasury, his founding of the Ibn Youssef College and his resistance to heresies, his visit to Paris to open an exhibition in 1937, then the outbreak of World War II, the rise of the Moroccan people to demand independence, the accompanying movements of the Resident-General and the French government, and the arbitrary measures taken by the protection authorities. Then he describes His Majesty’s work in establishing schools and encouraging interest in science and education. His historic visit to Tangier, then his visit to Marrakesh, the tension that occurred between the king and the public residence, the activity of the National Front, His Majesty’s submission of a memorandum demanding independence to the French government, and the escalation of incidents successively, then the Protection Authority issued orders for His Majesty to leave Morocco on August 20, 1953. His Majesty was exiled with his family members to the island of Madagascar, and the installation of Ibn Arafa on the throne of Morocco. Then the author describes the turmoil of incidents and affairs, and the frequent arrest of patriots, The multiplicity of acts of redemption, the establishment of the Liberation Army, and the failure of everything else the protectorate took to strengthen Ibn Arafa’s position, and then finally being forced to remove him from the throne, and the development of French policy and its adoption of a new direction, necessitated the summoning of the legitimate Sultan Sidi Mohammed from his exile to France (October 1955), and the end of the consultations with his return to Rabat (November 1955) and then his return to his legitimate throne, and the uprising of the Moroccan people from far and wide. It was filled with feelings of joy and patriotic enthusiasm, then His Majesty announced in his Throne Speech the end of the era of protection and the dawn of independence and freedom. The author then details the stages of the steps taken by the negotiations between Morocco and France to abolish the protectorate, the recognition of Morocco’s independence and unity, His Majesty’s travel to France to follow up on the negotiations in this regard, and the end of the negotiations with Morocco winning its independence, freedom and unity.
