Sufi psychology has influenced many areas of thinking both inside and outside of Islam, drawing primarily on three concepts. Ja'far al-Sadiq (both an imam of the Shia tradition and a respected scholar and link in chains of Sufi transmission in all Islamic sects) held that human beings are dominated by a lower self called the nafs, a faculty of spiritual intuition called the qalb or spiritual heart, and a spirit or soul called ruh. These interact in various ways, producing the spiritual types of the tyrant (dominated by nafs), the person of faith and moderation (dominated by the spiritual heart), and the person lost in love for God (dominated by the spirit). Ja'far as-Sadiq (both an imam in the Shiite tradition and a respected scholar and link in the chain of Sufi traditions in all Islamic sects) held that people are ruled by: a lower being called the nafs, the faculty of spiritual intuition called the kalb or spiritual heart, and the spirit or soul called the ruh. Between them there are various ways of interaction, as a result of which spiritual types of tyrants (under the rule of the nafs), the man of faith and moderation (under the rule of the spiritual heart) and the man lost in love for God (under the rule of the spirit) are created.
