The term naqā'id.a, which can be translated as satirical jousts, designates pairs of mocking poems, composed on the same meter and the same rhyme. They oppose two poets belonging to different groups (clans or tribes) who confront each other in a caustic manner and mischievously play with intertextuality. Attested since the pre-Islamic era, these poetic jousts reached their peak during the Umayyad era (661-750 AD). Mohammed Bakhouch offers here a translation of the naqā'id. who opposed, for twenty-three years, the poets ˇGarīr (having lived in al-Bas.ra, present-day Basra, in Iraq, died in 729) and al-A̮ ht.al (from a nomadic tribe from the east of al-Jazira, died in 710). The translation of the twenty-one poems in the collection (the twenty-first is due to the poet al-Farazdaq, who died in 728 in al-Bas.ra) is preceded by a presentation in which the author highlights the role of honor (the 'ird.) in these naqā'id. and their triple satirical, magical and dialogic dimension.
