Notes Bright colors and geometric shapes decorate this Caucasian rug with abstract religious symbols. The arched prayer niche known as the mihrab indicates the direction towards Mecca in which Muslims pray. The upper part of the rug is inscribed with the date 1281 AH (1864 AD). Although the Umayyad and Abbasid Caliphates overthrew the Iranian empires in the Caucasus and Azerbaijan, Persia's cultural influence remains central. Thus, this rug embodies a mixture of influences from Islam and pre-Islamic countries. Primary colors of natural dyes lighten carpets from the Shirvan region, and the blue likely represents water as a source of life. The symmetry in these textiles creates harmony with repeating motifs such as the cuppa with tooth-like edges and diamonds for protection from the evil eye. Finally, two checkered rectangles resemble a chess board, suggesting a possible alternative use of these rugs on trips for entertainment
