Notes
This binding concerns a one-volume Qur’an dating back to the Almohad period. The latter wrote in Andalusian cursive characters on covered parchment, the same square size as the manuscript it protects. This binding, decorated with intense geometric and floral decoration, consists of two surfaces, joined by snap-joints, closed by a fold of iron-embossed red leather and reinforced by a layer of cardboard. The central structure of the two surfaces consists of a square studded with octagonal stars, emanating different polygonal shapes generated by geometric interlacing, the edges of which are covered with a gilded and incised decorative element. This composition is surrounded by three overlapping frames of varying width, decorated with double-branched interlacing and braiding, and straight and curvilinear interlacing branches, the spaces of which are filled by small, simplified, gilded flowers with small chains. The snap-joints, corresponding to the thickness of the volume, are decorated with rosettes gathered in the form of small bunches and inserted between the knots of an interwoven chain. Judging by the intensity of its decoration, the binding is not contemporary with the Qur’an it protects, and was not executed before the Marinid period. There is no doubt that it underwent subsequent renovation, as suggested by its state of preservation and the oriental-style floral decorative elements painted on the back of the partitions. Indeed, these bouquets of vase decorations embodying Turkish-Indian influence were not introduced into the decorative record of Moroccan art until the beginning of the AH 11th century / AD 17th century.
