Notes
A sheet of Qur’an copied onto a piece of paper, on which Surah Al-Fatihah was written (Sura No. 1, verses 1 and 2). The writing has not yet been recognized well, due to the use of the two scripts, Kufic, Naskh and Rayhani. The calligraphy of the cursive writing tends more to the rectangular shape than to the curved shape. The dots of the vowels are not present in this writing, but according to the system developed by the grammarian Al-Khalil Ibn Ahmad, the diacritic movements are abundant in it, and they are red in color for the vowels, blue in color for the signs of sukun and shadda, and bright green in color for the signs of hamza and duration. This paper is distinguished by the presence of a strip containing the name and number of verses of the following surah written in gold. The name was written inside a group of frames placed on top of each other, where a geometric decoration of braids and a floral decoration consisting mainly of a multi-lobed flower alternate. Some of these strips are engraved with gold, while the entire circumference is covered in maroon, while a palm leaf composed of floral decorations adorned with flowers protrudes towards the margin. At the top of the page and on the right margin there is a maroon-colored diamond rhombus bearing geometric decorations, and the corners are decorated with four capitals painted in the same color. Meanwhile, the ribs are decorated outward with maroon and blue circles. As for the central part, it was decorated with calligraphic inscriptions in gold indicating the number of verses. He copied this Qur’an and had it decorated in gold and bound by Ibn Ahmad al-Warraq for Fatima, the nurse (nanny) of the Zirid prince Badis. The work was supervised and financed by Mrs. Dora, the nanny’s secretary. The Index of the Completion of the Qur’an refers to the donation document presented by the governess of Prince Badis in favor of the Great Mosque of Kairouan, and authenticated by the judge of Kairouan, Abdallah Ibn Hashim.
