Notes
The Ottoman tughra is a layout of state emblems representing the authority of the Sultan and was included in all official documents, including the firmans (sultan decrees), endowment papers, correspondence, and coins. It was used by the first Ottoman Sultan in 1324 and was later developed into a more complex form that was not easy to read or copy. This example represents the initials of Sultan Suleiman the Great (reigned 1520-66) and its unique style is a complex layout that includes the name and titles of the Sultan, the name of his father, and the phrase “The Ever Victorious.” The thick, indicative script contrasts with the decoration with the coils of the vine as an ornament. This tughra is the header of a long, narrow document in a coiled form, the first line of which is written in gold script at the bottom of the page.
