Date 1131 h.q. 1718 or 1719
Notes Short copy of a manuscript, content: History of Kašmīr with a preface (of 4 pages), in which the author calls himself Kamāl-ad-Dīn Malik Muḥammad Nāǧī Ibn-Malik Nuṣrat from the tribe of Haidar and says that he wrote this work on the orders of Sulṭān Nūr-ad-Dīn Ğahāngīr Pādishāh Ġāzī in 1027 [h.q.] [1617 or 1618]. - The story begins, after a treatise on the former name of Kashmir (Satisaras), with the fabulous description of the drying up of the Kashmir valley by Kashab (Kashyapa), the son of Marichi and grandson of Brahmā, after he killed the giant Djaladiv, and with the settlement of the country by the Brahmins from Hindustan, and continues up to the author's time. - This is probably the newly translated and abbreviated history of Kašmīr from the Rajatarangini on the orders of Sulṭān Ğahāngīr in 1207 [h.q.] [1618]. The beginning of the work immediately shows how freely the author treated the Indian original text, in that the fable of the giant Djaladiv is not in the Indian original, but was only added by the Persian editor. This fable also appears in another Persian-written history of Kašmīr, "Wāqiʿāt-i Kašmīr" by Muḥammad ʿAẓīm, and some passages match verbatim with this manuscript. Literature: See H. H. Wilson's Essay on the Hindu History of Cashmir in the 15th volume of the Asiatic Researches, Serampore 1825 in 4, where p. 93 the relevant passage from the "Wāqiʿāt-i Kasmīr" is printed. Since the latter work is of a later date than our manuscript, it is likely that its author used our work. Information about various Persian adaptations of the history of Kašmīr can also be found in the Histoire du Kachmir, trad. de l'original sanskrit par M. H. Wilson, Incomplete: The manuscript has gaps and is not very correct. It also lacks headings, which makes the overview difficult, old signature: Quatremère 141, BSB provenance: Étienne Quatremère (1782-1857)
Edebi tür Handschrift | GND-ID: (DE-588)4023287-6
