Notlar	Nūshīrvān listens to the owls, from the Treasury of Secrets (Makhzan al-asrār) by Niẓāmī. The poet Niẓāmī tells how the young king Nūshīrvān was out riding with his wise minister, on a hunting trip. Separated from the others, the two paused at a ruined village. Hearing two owls hooting in the ruins, the king asked the older man what he thought the birds were saying. The minister took the opportunity to give some delicate political advice: the owls were talking about the king himself, he explained, and how his terrible government policies were ruining so many villages throughout the land. This was good news for owls, who were masters of all derelict buildings. Shocked by the truth of this lesson, Nūshīrvān got the point, and promised to improve right away. The artist has added graffiti to the crumbling walls on the upper left of this painting. These lines are more quotations from Persian poetry, all addressed to owls. The month and date are also written here, for the year 960 in the Islamic Hijri calendar: November 1553.
