About: Gloss on the commentary by Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad al-Rāzī Quṭb al-Dīn al-Taḥtānī, (d.766/1365) on al-Risālah al-shamsīyah, a treatise on logic by ʻAlī ibn ʻUmar al-Qazwīnī (d. 675/1276). Description provided by Noah Gardiner. | Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 608
Origin: As appears in colophon on fol.101b copied by Muḥammad ibn Maḥmūd [...?]. Copying finished in the middle of Shaʻbān 942 [February 1536].
Accompanying materials: a. Inventory cataloguing slips in hand of Winifred Smeaton Thomas. -- b. Acquisitions slip from Yahuda.
Former shelfmark: From inner front cover and spine label, "IL 84" (likely supplied by Yahuda).
Binding: Pasteboard covered in marbled paper (in lavender, blue and white) with light brown leather on the spine and fore-edge flap (nearly half-bound); Type II binding (with flap); intact and likely later than text.
Support: non-European laid paper; non-"Mamluk" with slightly curved (wavy), single chain lines running horizontally and separated by roughly 32 cm. ; laid lines running vertically and spaced roughly 8-9 laid lines per cm. (see fol.5 for very clear chain lines); flyleaves of European laid paper with watermark partially visible "AGNANI" [?].
Decoration: Text rubricated with words such as "qāla" marking the dialogic relationship between this gloss and text which it is glossing, in red; red overlines and flourishes are also occasionally used.
Script: Naskh; very small hand with alifs just under 2 mm. high, having an Eastern and possibly Persian character; lām alifs have a prominent barbed serif on the left-hand ascender; an upward-spiraling hāʼ is used in the colophon (fol. 101b); elongated swooping tails on some final letters; tanwīn al-fatḥah is marked, hamzah and shaddah are not.
Layout: Written in 17 lines per page; frame-ruled.
Collation: 9 V (90), VI-1 (101) (final quire could be V+1 but numerous repairs make it difficult to ascertain; sewing appears after the 6th folio); catchwords present; pagination in pencil, Western numerals (referenced in cataloguing).
Title from inscription on fol.1a 'titlepage'.
Ms. codex.
Occasional marginal corrections throughout, many in the copyist's hand, all marked with abbreviation or ligature for ṣaḥḥa; marks of collation in the form of "بلغ" appear frequently throughout; only note of any significant length appears on fol.89a (in nastaʻlīq).
