This manual titled ‘Book of Glory and Advantage for Those Fighting in the Holy War with Artillery and Cannons for the Glory of God’ (Kitabal-'Izz wa'-manafi' li'l-mujahidin fisabilAllah b'aalt al-hurub wa'l-madafi') was written by Ar-Ribash (in Spanish Rivas or Rives) around 1630-32. It was translated around 1638 from Spanish by Ahmad b. Qasim b. Ahmad b. al-FaqihQasim b. ash-Shaikh al-Haghari al-Andalusi. According to the colophon, this copy was completed by the scribe Muhammad Khuja, the son of translator Ahmad b. Qasim, in 1050 AH / 1641 AD in the city of Tunis, Tunisia. The manuscript was published by Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall in 1811, so it must have entered the Austrian National Library before this date. Interestingly, from a cultural and historical point of view, this North-African copy is an example of European technical knowledge disseminating into the Arab world. However, hadiths were added to the text, and landscape background as well as the figures of European artillerymen were omitted from the 38 half- to full-page technical drawings. Fewer than a dozen copies exist, and their dates of manufacture range from the middle of the 17th to the late 18th century. Another example of this manual is a directly or simultaneously copied manuscript located in the National Library of Algiers in Tunis (no. 1511). The author copied the text of the book‘Plática manual de artillería’by Luis Collado (Milan 1592) partly verbatim, and partly in an abridged form. The same manuscript as well as C. Lechuga’s‘Discurso de la artillería’(Milan 1611) served as models for the technical illustrations.

The European white vellum paper binding features a title inscription in brown ink on its spine. The title is written in Arabic script with the added Latin translation of’Liber gloriae et utilitatis pro iis, qui ope tormentorum bellicorum pro fide certant.
