About: Elegant copy of a selection of excerpts from Niẓāmī's Khamsah, divided into 37 chapters (باب) each addressing a subject relating to piety, ethics, or etiquette (see pp.5-8 for a listing of the chapters). For a similar abridgement of Khamsah-i Niẓāmī, see Isl. Ms. 289. Contributions to the cataloguing from Ali Rafi. | Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 288
Origin: As appears in colophon on p.105, copied by Muḥammad al-Qivām [al-Qavām], al-Kātib al-Shīrāzī, likely in Shīrāz (see Lâle Uluç's article, "A Persian epic, perhaps for the Ottoman sultan," p.57) with transcription completed Dhū al-Qaʻdah 954 [December 1547-January 1548].
Former shelfmark: "394 T. D. M." [i.e. Tammaro De Marinis] inscribed in pencil on 'title page' (p.1).
Binding: Pasteboards covered in dark brown leather ; Type II binding (with flap) ; board linings and hinges in shell 'marbled' paper (in mainly brown and blue) ; fore edge flap lined in silk ; upper and lower covers carry 'gold'-stamped mandorla (filled with vegetal composition - now damaged, recessed onlays now gone to green) and cornerpieces with tooled rosette accents and border in a series of s-shaped stamps ; design continues on envelope flap ; sewn in cream thread, two stations ; worked chevron endbands in dark pink and green, fairly good condition ; overall in fair condition with some staining, abrasion, some lifting of leather, etc.
Support: non-European (likely Persian) laid paper with 8 laid lines per cm. (horizontal and fairly indistinct with some curving), quite sturdy and well-burnished though transluscent.
Decoration: Elegant (though damaged) illuminated headpiece (ʻunwān / sarlawḥ ) at opening on p.2 consisting of large rectangular piece with gold cartouche carrying opening title ("خلاصه خمسه") in white surrounded by swirling arabesque with floral motifs (in gold, light blue, white, yelow, pink, red, etc.) on fields of lapis lazuli and gold (evoking book cover design), surmounted by rectangular piece with row of swirling arabesque on fields of lapis lazuli and gold, all surrounded by border in blue with white crosses and surmounted by vertical stalks (tīgh) in blue ; written area of incipit and facing page set off by cloud-bands consisting of vegetal designs in green, pink and red on a gold ground ; written area surrounded by frame consisting of a series of gold, red, and light blue rules defined by black fillets ; some keywords and section headings chrysographed, others in blue ink.
Script: Nastaʻlīq ; elegant hand ; serifless, with effect of words descending to baseline, closed counters, elongated horizontal strokes of exaggerated thickness.
Layout: Written in 10 lines per page ; frame-ruled.
Collation: IV-2 (6), 5 IV(46), IV-1 (53) ; exclusively quaternions (two anonmalous) ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization.
