Notlar Woven linen and silk. Egyptian, Manshiya?, Fatimid, ca. AD1000-1200. Tiraz. The linen is undyed and loosely woven. Approx. 19x17 tpc. Thread dia. differ and are between 0.1mm and 0.5mm. There are two bands of woven silk across the piece. They repeat the same pattern. The main band (22mm wide) is of the guilloche pattern/ interlaced waves (yellow and black), on a blue background, with floral icons in the centre (red, black and yellow). Above and below this are bands (12mm wide) of connected floral icons (yellow and red). One either side of these bands are smaller bands (8mm wide) of black wave-like lines on a yellow background. Small lines of colour sit on the outside of all these (cream, red and white). In the Abbasid period (AD750-1258) fabrics, called tiraz, were made in present day Iraq and Egypt. The word came to mean honorific robes with woven or embroidered inscriptions. Text from the Koran was embroidered across the fabric with a line of geometric shapes above that were probably for decoration. Text might also include information such as the name of the reigning caliph, place of production and date.
