Carpet fragment of hand knotted wool and cotton. WARP: cream and brown wool plied together; Z3S; two cream and one brown; 18 threads per inch (63 per dm). WEFT: white cotrton; Z3S, possibly two cotton and one wool; 2 shoots after every row of knots; 10 knots per inch (40 per dm). PILE: wool; 11 colours: red, orange, yellow , dark green, light green, dark blue, light blue, dark brown (corroded), light brown, black, cream; plus small amount of olive embroidery to replace corroded dark brown, with some pink/green embroidery; symmetrical knot tied around 2 threads; 90 knots per sq. inch (1260 per sa. dm.) SIDE FINISH: incomplete. Wefts cut and outer guard stripe missing. Blue cord seam onto raw edge and oversewn. END FINISH: cut DESIGN: Field: dark blue ground with central six-sided, blue medallion bordered with blocks containing flowerheads, with an outer, stepped border of red/green squares. There are geometric motifs, blossoms and S motifs in the field and part of two hooked, multi-coloured diamonds in the upper part. Main border: white ground with a curved, overlapping motif - each in a different colour. Inner border: yellow S motif on red Outer border: red S motif on light blue.
