The style of lustre decoration used on this object, combining figures on horseback with plants and arabesque designs, is known as the miniature style. It is closely associated with the town of Kashan, one of Iran's main centres of production for lustre. The function of this object is unknown, but it is very similar in shape to English posset pots. These were used for serving posset, a thick creamy drink, and this pot may have had a similar function; the small spouts would act like straws, to draw liquid up from the base of the pot and avoid any residue floating on the top.
