Notlar
This jacket is made of purple silk velvet and embroidered with a trompe l'oeil necklace. It dates to the late 19th century and belonged to the female member of a wealthy and important family in Shiraz, southern Iran. The ornate decoration and tailoring of this jacket is typical of female fashion in Iran at this time. This was a remarkable period for emerging modernity in Iranian style, which combined national conservatism with modifications of western designs. The excellent condition of the jacket tells us it was rarely worn and was probably a gift, or soghati , brought by visitors.
