19th century carpet WARP: white wool; Z2S; 10 threads per inch (39 per dm). WEFT: red wool; Z spun, unplied; 2 shoots after each row of knots; 8 knots per inch (29 per dm). PILE: wool; 7 colours: red, orange, light orange, blue, light blue, black, white; symmetrical knot tied around 2 threads; 40 knots per sq. inch (565 per sq. dm). SIDE FINISH: web of 6 warp threads overcast with red wool. END FINISH: Lower: incomplete, but with 7 cms. of plain weave with a maximum of 5 cms. of red weft and then green and light orange. Upper 9 cms. plain weave with 5.5 cms. of red weft and with band of green/light orange/ green. On the red band there is a triangle of knotted pile with a blue centre. Twined end finish in 3 bands with warp threads grouped in fours. DESIGN: Field: red ground with two blue ground broad rectangles with an arrowhead or cross on each side lying on the central vertical axis. Within each rectangle, and quartering it, is a white diamond with 4 subsidiary pendants and within that is a blue and red star. Each quarter contains a large pair of horns in light orange. These rectangles are separated by 2 halves of a similar design, each divided in half and each half containing a pair of horns. Towards each corner of the field there is a right angled bracket. The inward side is indented. Each has a blue ground containing a star. Beyond the brackets, at the lower and upper end of the field is a row of 7 stars. Main border: white ground with leaf and wine glass pattern; the leaves are in two colours. Inner and outer border: narrow stripe of alternating diagonal blocks in white and red, outlined in black.
