WARP: light brown wool with 6 cms. towards left of light brown plied with cream wool and 8 cm. of brown wool at extreme right; all Z2S; 22 threads per inch (100 per dm). WEFT: Foundation: white cotton, Z3S; one shoot between patterned wefts; 19 threads per inch (80 per dm). Pattern: wool and cotton; wool Z2S, cotton Z2S; 10 colours: red, yellow, green , blue, light blue, pink, brown, dark brown, black, white; Sequence: over 4 warp threads and back under 2. SIDE FINISH: returned wefts. These were probably oversewn when the bag was assembled but these stitches have been cut and now resemble tufts. END FINISH: Lower: cut. Upper: maximum of 5 cms. plainweave with paired warp threads and with the weft in bands of brown, pink and dark brown. Evidence of stitching where the end had been turned under. DESIGN: cf. T.97-1925. There are seven bands of geometric design. The central, deep band is of six-sides, linked and hooked motifs; bands 2 and 6 have a red ground with a continuous blue, angular motif on a central stem, all infilled with small crosses; bands 1,3,5, and 7 have a yellow ground with a zigzag pattern in various colours. All these bands are separated by narrow bands of solid colour and by narrow bands of adjacent squares. Catalogue date: 27.3.91

Purchased as one of siz pieces for a total of £2.5s. "6 pieces of saddlebags, Soumak weaving. Early 19th century" "These are very good specimens of Soumak-weaving, and are of a kind that will prbably be unobtainable in the near future. The price is very moderate."
