Duplicate niche carpet WARP: brown wool with some cream plied 2 brown and 1 cream thread; Z3S; 14 threads to the inch (55 per dm). WEFT: white cotton with variable thickness of spin; Z4S; 2 shoots after each row of knots; highly variable number of rows of knots which average 11 to the inch (41 per dm). (NB: could provide range of readings). PILE: wool; 8 colours: red, yellow, dark green, green, dark blue, blue, dark brown, cream; symmetrical knot tied around 2 threads; 154 knots to the sq. inch (1128 per sq. dm). SIDE FINISH: both sides have two cords overcast in blue wool, and in white cotton at extreme lower ends. END FINISH: lower: incomplete; (1.5 cms.) plain weave in white cotton remaining warp fringe of 5 cms. max knotted to form a lattice. Upper: incomplete; 2 cms. of plain weave in white cotton and then a narrow band in blue wool; remaining warp ends 9.5 cms. max. also knotted into a lattice; 13 cms. reweaving of plain weave and fringe in white cotton. DESIGN: field: red ground with a row of three lozenges each bearing a hooked cruciform shape in red or white with a centre of five or six concentric diamonds, the whole lozenge boldly outlined in dark blue, dark brown or blue and hooked on all four sides. Above and below the top lozenge are two niches in an angular cloudband design, the upper one white and the lower yellow and within both is a line of small, multi-coloured squares. The two lower lozenges are joined vertically. Large and small stylised flowers and geometric motifs are strewn over the field. Main border: cream ground with two pairs of two overlapping triangles joined together at their base to form a self-coloured motif. Inner and outer border: dark brown ground with stylised, eight[petalled flowers in various colours; from the beginning of the field level upwards in the outer border, the flowers are separated by pairs of intrusive triangles. Innermost border: cream ground with barbed and barred S motifs in red, dark green, dark blue and blue. Innermost border: cream ground with barbed and barred S motifs in red, dark green, dark blue and blue. Outer guard stripe in red and blue diagonal lines continues across the whole width of the lower main border.
