Notlar
Tapestry woven wool, s-spun. Egyptian, ca. AD300-500. A circlur medallion cut from a larger piece. In the centre is a mermaid in undyed wool with two fish (?) on her right and something hanging from her left arm. She is on a background of red. A circular border of green scrolling waves surrounds her. Slightly dirty. The mermaid was a common motif in Mediterranean and Near Eastern art but its symbolisim in Christianity is unclear.
