Notlar
A piece of textile cut in a round shape. Egyptian, ca. 300-600. At the centre are three mermaids (?)/ dancing figures above an upturned fish/pot. They are surrounded by a circle in a guilloché pattern (interlacing chords). Outside the circle are a number of objects (fish/pots?) and four of these (at top, bottom and each side) are enclosed in a square. Approx. 10x44 tpc, S-spun. Mermaids were common in Near Eastern and Mediterranean art but their symbolism in Christianity is not clear.
