Throughout the 19th century the V&A actively purchased collections of traditional jewellery from around the world. The main purpose of this was to provide examples which would help to improve the design standards of British workers, but wherever possible the curators also recorded information about the origin and purpose of the pieces they acquired. Although these objects were often bought new at the time, many are now among the oldest surviving examples of their kind, and some are unique survivors of lost patterns of behaviour. This little gold filigree clasp was described as Persian when it was acquired by the Museum in 1884, and âused by women to fasten the veil behind the headâ. Without that information it would now be almost impossible to identify with any certainty how it was originally used or even where it was made.

Small two-part gold filigree clasp. Each part consists of a domed open filigree rosette, with a red paste set in a cylindrical mount in its centre. The rosette is surrounded by a border of sheet gold, decorated with applied gold filigree scrolls, with a rim of triangles made from granules. There is a bar across the back with a loop for fastening at one end and a hook and ring respectively at the other.
