Caucasian carpet. WARP: light brown, white and light brown/white (plied together) wool; Z2S; 18-22 threads per inch (74-78 per dm); WEFT: white wool; Z3S; 2 shoots after each row of knots; 9-12 knots per inch (42-50 per dm). PILE: wool; 8 colours: red (varies in shade), yellow, dark green, blue, purple, (faded), light brown, black, white; symmetrical knot tied around 2 threads; average of 106 knots per sq. inch (average 1752 per sq. dm). SIDE FINISH: one cord overcast with white wool; some later oversewing. END FINISH: lower: incomplete but with 1.5 cms. of plain weave with white wool and with evidence of a fringe of at least 4 rows of off-set knotting. Upper 1 cm. plain weave with white wool and with evidence of a fringe of at least 2 rows of off-set knotting. DESIGN: Field: Three linked rectangles; the central one has a red ground and the other two have a blue ground and contain an octagon with a white ground. The three rectangles are contained within a series of 5 narrow borders filled with geometric motifs which vary along the length of the carpet. There are various geometric motifs scattered across the ground. A zigzag border outlines the field. Main border: white ground with a stepped double-S motif Inner border: black ground with rosettes. Outer border: black ground with stylised flowerheads.
