10 folios of Tahmasp Shahnama at Khalili Collection | Culture: Islamic, Persian | Materials/Techniques: ink, gold, color (pigment), paper, opaque watercolor, gold, silver, ink on paper. | Note: General note: One of the most luxurious examples of Persian book arts ever created, this monumental copy of Firdawsi's 10th c. "Shahnama" was produced in the kitabkhana (scriptorium-library) of Shah Tahmasp I in Tabriz between 1525-1530. Exceptionally large in scale, the Tahmasp Shahnama contained 760 folios w/ 258 illustrated pages. | Note: Provenance: In 1568, the manuscript was presented to the Ottoman Sultan Selim II. The manuscript remained in Istanbul until procured for the Paris Rothchilds ca. 1900. The manuscript was virtually intact until 1959 when it was purchased by Arthur A.
