Qur'an, bound codex, 445 folios, ink, gold and pigments on paper, Arabic calligraphy and illumination, signed by Ruzbihan Muhammad al-Tab`i al-Shirazi (f.445r), Shiraz, Iran, c. 1535-1565. Produced in the city of Shiraz, this splendid Qur’an is an extraordinary example of the arts of the book in sixteenth-century Iran. The sacred text was written out by renowned master-calligrapher Ruzbihan. He used three different scripts to copy out the main text and further calligraphic styles for the chapter headings. Throughout the manuscript, the Qur'anic text is accompanied by a rich programme of sophisticated and colourful illumination, dominated by burnished gold and deep lapis blue.
