Notlar Ms. codex., Title from closing matter on p.371., Incipit: "منت خدایرا عز و جل که طاعتش موجب قربتست ...", Explicit: "تمام شد کتاب گلستان و الله المستعان و بتوفیق خدای عز اسمه درین نسخه چنانکه رسم مؤلفانست از شعر متقدمان بطریق استعاره تلفیقی نرفت ... بر رسولان بیام باشد و بس تمام شد کتاب گلستان بعون الله المستعان", Collation: i, 22 IV(176), IV + 2 (186), i ; exclusively quaternions (final anomalous) ; middle of the quire marks in the form of black oblique strokes in the upper outer corner of the right-hand leaf and lower outer corner of the left-hand leaf ; catchwords present ; foliation in black ink, Hindu-Arabic numerals, upper outer corner of written area (gold band of frame) on verso of each leaf ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during cataloguing., Layout: Written in 11 lines per page ; frame-ruled., Script: Nastaʻlīq ; large, fine Indian hand in a medium to bold line ; characteristically serifless, with gentle effect of words descending to baseline, elongation and exaggerated thickness of horizontal strokes, pointing in distinct dots, point of final nūn set just down in wide, angled bowl., Decoration: Elegant illuminated headpiece (ʻunwān / sarlawḥ) at opening on p.2 consisting of rectangular piece with empty gold cartouche flanked by floral motifs on a pistachio / turquoise ground surmounted by scalloped hasp and dome filled with delicate floral and vegetal motifs (saz leaves, etc.) in lavender, pistachio / turquoise, red and gold on grounds of gold and dark blue, all set in a well of dark blue with white crosses ; gold cloud-bands and gold-painted marginal decoration (floral motifs and swirling leaves) complete double-page illumination at opening (p.2-3) ; written area gold-painted and surrounded by frame of gold and pistachio / turquoise bands set off by red and blue fillets ; margins defined by bands of gold-painted vegetal designs (evoking saz leaves) outlined by black fillets ; keywords and headings rubricated or in blue ink., Support: non-European (likely Indian or Persian) laid paper with 7 laid lines per cm. (vertical, fairly distinct) and occasional chain lines, thin, crisp and transluscent though sturdy, dark cream to beige in color, well-burnished to glossy with field of gold-painted written area mounted in ; some pest damage, breakthrough at frames., Binding: Pasteboards covered in dark brown leather ; Type III binding (without flap) ; doublures in red-brown leather with scalloped mandorla and pendants in stamped, gold-painted paper onlays filled with floral compositions and set off by gold-painted vegetal accents and rule border ; spine lining in olive green silk ; upper and lower covers carry large, central rectangular panel in stamped, gold-painted pink paper onlays (applied to recessed leather) filled with symmetrical floral vegetal composition and surrounded by gold-painted and tooled rule borders setting off wide border (also in recessed leather onlays with stamped, gold-painted paper applied) with additional vegetal motifs ; sewn in dark pink thread, two stations ; worked chevron endbands in cream and pink, good condition ; overall in somewhat poor condition with lower cover fully detached, losses of leather and paper (recessed onlays), abrasion, etc. ; housed in box for protection., Origin: Lacks dated colophon ; decoration, paper, etc. would suggest 18th century. Date in seal impressions provides very rough terminus ante quem of 1815., Oval seal impressions dated 1230 [1814 or 15] in name of one ʻAzīz on front flyleaf "عزيز ١٢٣٠" and on 'title page' (p.1) "عزيز عبد الله در دو عالم باد ١٢٣٠" ; clean copy., Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl.
