Notes
One of the most important christological titles used to describe Jesus in the New Testament and in the traditional understanding of Christianity is "Son of God" (ό υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ). It seems that the concept of the Son of God was widely adopted in both Jewish and pagan cultural circles in the pre-Christian period. As a matter of fact, the expression Son of God, which finds a place in Jewish circles with its human meaning, must have been similarly attributed to Jesus as a royal title by the Jerusalem community, which consisted of the first followers of Jesus, in connection with the concept of Messiah. However, with the spread of Christianity in the pagan world, the title Son of God also changed its meaning. In this process, Paul of Tarsus and the authors of the Bible texts in the New Testament interpreted this expression as a superhuman and divine being and repositioned Jesus within this framework. This article discusses how Jesus was transformed from the status of a "virtuous human being" to the status of a "divine being", with the meaning given by Paul to the expression "Son of God".
