Notes
Research Objectives: This article examines interpretive views on the most famous surah in the Qur’an from commentators who lived in diverse contexts in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Badiuzzaman Said Nursi is arguably the most influential theologian to emerge from Ottoman Turkey during its long history. In contrast, Hajj Muhammad Said bin Omar has a local reputation as a scholar in the Malaysian-Indonesian region but is little known outside of it. Methodology: The study is based on a comparative analysis of these two scholars’ interpretation of Surat Al-Fatihah, and explore the methods they used to reach ordinary Muslims with their interpretation, not just the highly educated.Findings:Badiuzzaman Said Nursi and Hajj Muhammad Said bin Omar came from very different backgrounds and contexts. Moreover, their interpretive approaches were fundamentally different, the former being more rational and the latter more literal. However, both of them succeeded in producing interpretations that reached the masses, and thus succeeded in achieving their general goals of promoting religious commitment and the dynamic spirit of Muslims in their own contexts. Originality of the research: This research is original in various ways: First - Said Nursi’s comparative studies with Malay language interpreters are few in number. Second, identifying similarities in findings despite differences in approaches in the field of interpretation requires more academic attention, and this article should stimulate interest in more such studies.
