The first of 17 works printed by Ibrahim Müteferrika, "müteferrika" (house steward) to Sultan Ahmed III, and first Muslim printer of moveable Arabic type in the Muslim world. Müteferrika was born in Kolozsvár, Transylvania sometime between 1672 and 1675, and converted to Islām after moving to Constantinople as a young man. A man of many talents, Müteferrika was a cartographer, editor, translator, printer, typefounder, and scholar; he held many different administrative positions at court, and also served as a diplomat for the Ottoman empire abroad.. An important and celebrated two-volume Arabic-Turkish dictionary by Ismāʻīl ibn Ḥammād Jawharī, translated into Turkish by Vankulu Mehmet Efendi, also known as Vānkuli.
