Ms. 636 Origin: As appears in colophon on p.313, copied by ʻUmar ibn Ismāʻīl with transcription completed 9 Rajab 1035 [ca. 6 April 1626]. Accompanying materials: a. Acquisitions slip from Yahuda -- b. Inventory cataloguing slip in hand of Winifred Smeaton Thomas. Former shelfmark: From interior of upper cover and label on fore edge flap "IL 402" (likely supplied by Yahuda, see acquisitions slip). Binding: Pasteboards covered in light brown leather ; Type II binding (with flap) ; board linings in untinted laid paper ; spine lining in red and white striped textile ; upper and lower covers carry scalloped blind-stamped mandorla (filled with vegetal composition, similar to Déroche class. OAi 2) as well as tooled border in a series of rules ; sewn in white thread, two stations ; worked chevron endbands in red and cream, good condition ; overall in somewhat poor condition with much abrasion, staining, minor lifting of leather, upper and lower covers detaching at spine, etc. ; repairs in dark brown to black leather ; housed in box for protection. Support: European laid paper with 7 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 28-30 mm. apart (horizontal), anchor in circle watermark (see p.104, etc.) and countermark with "C B" [?] under trefoil (see p.106, etc.) ; sturdy, medium cream in color, burnished. Decoration: Keywords, excerpts of qaṣīdah being commented upon and some abbreviation symbols rubricated ; written area surrounded by red and black triple rule-border. Script: Naskh ; elegant 'Syrian' or Turkish hand ; mainly serifless with slight effect of tilt to the left and of words descending to baseline (occasionally more exaggerated), quite rounded with curvilinear descenders (some rightward descenders majmūʻah), pointing mainly in distinct dots, kāf mashqqūah preferred (even final kāf), final yāʼ often unpointed. Layout: Written in 21 lines per page ; frame-ruled. Collation: 15 V(150), IV (158) ; almost exclusively quinions ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (mistakenly skips two pages between pp.9-10).
