Ms. 227 Origin: Lacks dated colophon ; decoration, hand, paper, binding, etc. suggest 15th century . Former shelfmark: "398 T. De M. [i.e. Tammaro De Marinis]" inscribed in pencil on verso of front flyleaf (p.4) ; "50" inscribed in pencil on 'title page' (p.7). Binding: Pasteboards covered in dark brown leather ; Type II binding (with flap) ; doublures in burnt red leather with central mandorla in fine leather filigree appliqué over gold leaf (with lapis cloth or paper at center) as well as tooled border ; upper and lower covers carry blind-stamped mandorla (filled with asymmetrical floral composition), pendants and cornerpieces as well as a tooled chain and fillets border ; design continues on flap ; sewn in red thread, two stations ; worked chevron endbands in red and lime green, headband in excellent condition (protected by leather spine cap), tailband in fairly good condition with some damage ; overall in fair condition with some abrasion, staining, lifting of leather, pest damage, etc. Support: non-European laid paper with 8-9 laid lines per cm. (horizontal or vertical) and occasional single chain lines visible, fairly indistinct, cloudy formation, sturdy and fairly thick, heavily sized and burnished (burnisher's marks visible), cream in color ; leaf carrying 'title page' and incipit page trimmed to leave written area and lower margin and mounted in a leaf cut out to accommodate view of illuminated titlepiece on 'title page' (p.7). Decoration: Exquisite illuminated almond-shaped titlepiece on 'title page' (p.7) carries title and author of work in gold on a central field of lapis lazuli with white vegetal accents, surrounded by elaborate border consisting of an inner most band of green (with black crosses) outlined in gold fillets, a heavy band of interlace in gold, and an outermost band with arabesque in red, green, black, gold and white on a field of lapis lazuli ; superb illuminated headpiece (ʻunwān / sarlawḥ) at opening on p.8 echoing design of titlepiece consists of rectangular panel surmounted by a band of arabesque with vertical stalks (tīgh) above ; rectangular panel carries basmalah in white floriated 'Kufic' on a field of lapis lazuli with gold vegetal accents surrounded by same border of innermost green and gold band with heavy band of interlace in gold as appears in titlepiece ; arabesque is also nearly identical to that appearing in titlepiece ; text of written area surrounded by frame consisting of a heavy gold band flanked by narrow inner gold band and outer blue fillet ; keywords, section headings, and abbreviation symbols chrysographed ; textual dividers in the form of gold discs or inverted commas. Script: Naskh ; elegant Persianate hand ; partially serifed with left-sloping barbed headserifs appearing mainly on final lām (and occasional lām of ilá, etc.), curvilinear descenders, pointing in distinct dots (liberally spaced), point of final nūn set down in wide bowl, almost fully vocalized.
