About: Fine copy of the Gulshān-i Rāz, the well-known Ṣūfī mas̲navī of Maḥmūd ibn ʻAbd al-Karīm ibn Yaḥyā al-Shabistarī (d. ca. 1320). | Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 311
Origin: Lacks dated colophon ; paper would suggest late 18th or 19th century.
Former shelfmark: "364 T. De M. [i.e. Tammaro De Marinis]" inscribed in pencil on 'title page' (p.1).
Binding: Pasteboards covered in black leather now with tan leather over spine and edges/turn-ins (leather faced and edged framed binding formed by turned-out doublures) ; Type III binding (without flap) ; doublures in red-brown leather ; upper and lower covers carry stamped (with now green onlays) scalloped mandorla (filled with symmetrical vegetal composition) and pendants, as well as a tooled border framing central area and over edging ; sewn in light red thread, six stations incorporating primaries ; worked chevron endbands in light red and spring green, fair condition ; overall in fairly good condition with some abrasion, staining, lifting of leather, etc. though ill-fitting (too tall, etc.).
Support: non-European (likely Persian or Indian) laid paper with 11 laid lines per cm. (vertical, fairly distinct and straight) and no chain lines visible, quite crisp, thin and transluscent though sturdy, well-burnished, off-white to gray in color.
Decoration: Written area surrounded by frame consisting of red, turquoise, and gold bands with outermost blue rule, columns within and outer margin defined by narrow gold bands outlined by black fillets ; section headings rubricated.
Script: Shikastah (shikastah-nastaʻlīq / شكسته نستعليق ) ; elegant hand ; freely ligatured, with effect of words descending to baseline, elongated 'horizontal' strokes, etc.
Layout: Written in 21 lines per page, with written area mainly divided to two columns ; frame-ruled.
Collation: 6 IV(48), I (50) ; quaternions followed by a single bifolium ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization.
