Notlar	About: Fine copy of an extract taken from al-Jāmiʻ al-azhar al-mufīd li-mufradāt al-arbaʻah ʻashr maʻa ṣināʻat al-rasm wa-al-tajwīd, a compilation on Qurʼānic readings (qirāʼāt) by Jaʻfar ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Sulaymān al-Muqrīʼ al-Shāfiʻī al-Sanhūrī al-Azharī (d.1489). \| Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 471 Origin: Lacks dated colophon ; paper, etc. suggest mid to late 15th century. Ownership statement on 'title page' (p.1) provides terminus ante quem of 1177 [1763 or 4]. Accompanying materials: a. Inventory cataloguing slip in hand of Winifred Smeaton Thomas -- b. Acquisitions slip from Yahuda. Former shelfmark: From inner front cover, "M. 23" (likely supplied by Yahuda, see acquisitions slip). Binding: Pasteboards covered in lavender paper with tan leather over spine and fore edge flap ; Type II binding (with flap) ; board linings in pale blue paper ; sewn in red thread, two stations ; worked chevron endbands in magenta and cream, good condition ; overall in poor condition with lower cover fully detached, spine detaching, lifting and losses of leather and paper, staining, abrasion, etc. ; housed in box for protection. Support: European laid paper of two main types ; main type with 10 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 37 mm. apart (horizontal), and large bunch of grapes watermark (noose on stem, drop-shaped berries, see p.8, 13, 28, etc.), thin and transluscent though sturdy, dark cream to beige in color, quite well-burnished ; another type with 11 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 27-37 mm. apart (horizontal), and crossed swords watermark (see p.432, 433, etc.), lighter in color, less well-burnished, still fairly transluscent ; some ink burn, staining and tide lines. Decoration: Keywords and section headings rubricated. Script: Naskh ; an angular Egyptian [?] or 'Syrian' hand in a medium to bold line ; serifless with dramatic effect of tilt to the right, elongation of horizontal strokes, occasional effect of words descending to baseline, mainly rectilinear descenders, pointing in strokes rather than distinct dots, kāf mashkūlah (mashqūqah) preferred, some free assimilation of letters. Layout: Written in 19 lines per page. Collation: 6 V(60), VI (72), 4 V(112), IV (120), V (130), VI (142), 2 V(162), IV (170), 3 V(200), V+1 (211), V (221) ; chiefly quinions ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization.
