Former shelfmark: British Museum, London "No. 140, Al-Nafi." Binding: Pasteboards (recycled paper) originally covered with reddish brown goat skin, spine and fore-edge flap repaired with lighter brown leather, now darker with age ; Type II binding (with flap) ; upper and lower covers carry gorgeous blind-tooled almond-shaped ornament (mandorla) with band and geometric infilling set off by rosette stamps (compare Weisweiler 89-95) as well as tooled rule borders and rosette accents ; sewn in two sewing stations, dark green thread, broken at head and tail ; endbands in maroon and white, partially intact at head and tail ; in poor condition ; leather has shrunk significantly with text-block protruding ; bottom of spine partially detatched ; top endband missing, bottom partially gone ; severe abrasion on all corners ; pasteboards delaminating ; spine partially detached from back cover ; fore-edge flap is stitched to back cover at hinge (sewn mend). Support: European laid paper with roughly 10 laid lines per cm. (vertical) and chain lines (horizontal) spaced roughly 30 mm. apart ; only lightly burnished ; thick and creamy ; watermark of scales / balance in circle with six-pointed star above (see p.6, 8, 274, 276, etc.) ; bull's head with eyes and above it a rod consisting of one line with a flower above that (compare Piccard inventory J340, no. 64743, Lechtenberg, 1492) ; loose folia at end, partially detatched pages at beginning ; water damage throughout but does not impact legibility. Decoration: Text rubricated with chapter and section headings, overlining, etc. in red. Script: Naskh ; two Persian or Turkish hands ; first hand virtually sans serif (though occasional right-sloping head-serifs on lām, alif, etc., perhaps inadvertantly) with generally open counters, dots rather than strokes for pointing, slight effect of tilt to the left ; p.185 on supplied in second hand, sans serif, effect of tilt to the right, free assimilation of letters such as rāʼ and final hāʼ, heavier line ; partially vocalized ; several hands for marginal and interlinear glosses. Layout: Written in 18 lines per page ; frame-ruled. Collation: III+1 (7), 12 IV (103), 2 III+1 (117), 3 IV (141), II (145) ; chiefly quaternions ; top three lines of fol.107a (p.213) left blank ; final leaf originally left blank ; lacks catchwords ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization.
