Notlar About: Fine copy of the commentary on al-Bayḍāwī's Ṭawāliʻ al-anwār min maṭāliʻ al-anẓār. | Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 6 Origin: Lacks dated colophon ; paper would suggest late 15th century or 16th century. Accompanying materials: Slip in wove paper with inventory cataloguing notes in pencil (paginated pp.1-2). Former shelfmark: British Museum, London "No. 6. Matali al-anzar." ; on front flyleaf (p.3) in black ink "۱۲". Binding: Pasteboards covered in brown leather ; Type II binding (with flap) ; board linings in paper ; upper and lower covers carry blind-stooled mandorla filled with geometric interlace and having border and pendants, along with border formed of s-shaped stamps and cornerpiece designs in a crescent-shaped stamp ; design carries on to envelope flap where crescent-shaped stamp is used in interlace filling of a blind-tooled roundel ; sewn in cream thread, two stations ; endbands essentially lost, only traces of primaries remain ; in quite poor condition with much delamination of boards, abrasion, moisture damage, and staining ; leather of fore-edge flap has lifted and a portion of the pasteboard is lost ; fore-edge and envelope flap are in quite a fragile state ; spine leather is also lifting and cover is detaching from textblock at spine, exposing spine lining. Support: non-European (likely Persian) laid paper in two types ; the first type is crisp and fairly smooth, well-burnished with a somewhat glossy finish, roughly 8 laid lines per cm. (vertical) and chain lines difficult to discern but seemingly sporadic and possibly grouped ; the second type appears in the run of ternions toward the end of the text and is much thicker, more opaque, roughly and only lightly burnished with 7 laid lines per cm. (horizontal) and scarce chain lines appearing sporadically ; undissolved fibers are seen in both types, even at the surface. Decoration: Text rubricated with keywords distinguishing matn and sharḥ (i.e. "قول" and "اقول"), overlining, rare section heading, etc. in red. Script: Naskh-nastaʻlīq ; bold Persian or Transoxanian hand ; strong effect of slant to the right, with words occasionally descending to baseline ; vertical character ; casually pointed. Layout: Written in 23 lines per page ; frame-ruled (impression of ruling-board evident). Collation: 6 IV(48), III+1 (55), 2 IV(71), III+1 (78), 6 IV(126), 4 III (150), IV (158), VI-1 (169) ; chiefly quaternions ; first folio and last two folios initially left blank, now carry excerpts, etc. ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (includes inserts, mistakenly skips two pages between pp.7-8 and pp.183-184). Title from inscription on fol.1a (p.3). Ms. codex. Bookplate of British Museum, London on upper cover,"British Museum, London. No. 6. Matali al-anzar." ; circular seal impression with figure of goat/gazelle in purple ink as well as inscription "191" in Western numerals on fol.1a (p.3) ; on paper (blue-tinted) pasted on fol.2a (p.5), a detailed waqf statement in the name of al-Sayyid ʻAbd Allāh Adīb (Abdullah Edip), known as Jannatʹzādah (Cennet-zade), qāḍī of Erzurum, accompanied by his seal, reads: "وقفت وقفا صحيحا شرعيا على ان لا يخرج من بيت الكتب الملتصق بداري الا لعلماء سكنوا بارضروم بكفيل مرعى اورهن قوي وانا الفقير اليه عز شانه السيد عبد الله اديب الشهير بجنت زاده القاضي بمدينة ارضروم في سنة اثنى وستين ومائتين والف" ; also on fol.2a (p.5) ownership statement, accompanied by virtually illegible circular/oval seal impression, reads: "من ممتلكات الحقير الفقير اليه عز شانه احمد بن مصطفى الشهير بديوانى [دلوانى؟] زاده بارضروم عفي عنهم" ; a few other effaced seal impressions on fol.2a (p.5) ; numerous glosses and marginal corrections.
