Ms. 452 Origin: Lacks dated colophon ; hand and paper suggest very late 13th or 14th century. Accompanying materials: a. Inventory cataloguing slip in hand of Winifred Smeaton Thomas. -- b. Acquisitions slip from Yahuda. -- c. Scrap marking 'hand change' (paginated pp.209-210). Former shelfmark: From inscription on interior of upper cover, "IL 39a" (likely supplied by Yahuda, see acquisitions slip) ; "۲۸۰" on 'title page' (p.3). Binding: Pasteboards covered in block-printed paper (repeating star/flower, circle motif) over marbled paper (in blue and white) with spine and edges/turn-ins in brown leather ; Type II binding (with flap, now fully detached) ; board linings in laid paper ; sewn in white thread, two stations ; worked endbands in blue and white, largely intact ; overall in poor condition with upper cover entirely detached, flap entirely detached, abrasion, lifting and losses of leather, etc. ; housed in box for protection. Support: non-European (likely Arab) laid paper of medium thickness with 10 laid lines per cm (horizontal) ; chain lines difficult to examine but appear to be 2 sets of 3, with 16-18 mm. between lines and roughly 50 mm. between sets. Decoration: Section headings and keywords setoff in larger, heavier script though not rubricated. Script: Naskh ; clear Syrian or Egyptian hand, larger in the opening and final section but smaller in between ; apparent hand changes around p.208 and again at p.363 ; opening hand mainly serifless, with alifs sometimes tapered with slight left foot (more pronounced in section headings), very slight effect of tilt to the left and of words descending to the left, mix of open and closed counters, and somewhat casually pointed ; following hands are very similar though second hand is certainly more compact with greater use of kāf mashqūqah in the final position and final hand is more liberally pointed (even alif maqṣūrah), with final hāʼ closed (approaching muḥdawdabah or makhṭūfah), and final yāʼ of في mardūdah ; often vocalized. Layout: Written in 21, 29 and 30 lines per page ; frame-ruled. Collation: 19 V (190) ; entirely quinions ; catchwords lacking (perhaps cutoff) ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (includes scrap marking 'hand change'). Colophon: "Authorial," reads: "قال الشيخ هذا اخر ما تيسر من املاء كتاب التبيان في اعراب القرآن ونسأل الله ان يوفقنا لشكر ..." Explicit: "قوله من الجنة هو بدل من شرٍ اعاده العامل اي من شر الجنة وقيل هو بدل من ذي الوسواس لان الموسوس من الجن وقيل هو حال من الضمير في يوسوس اي يوسوس وهو من الجن وقيل هو بدل من الناس اي في صدور الجنة وجعل من تبيينا واطلق على الجن اسم الناس لانهم يتحركون في مراداتهم والجن والجنة بمعنى وقيل من الجنة حال من الناس اي كائنين من القبيلين واما الناس لالخيار فقيل هو معطوف على ذي الوسواس اي من شر القبيلين وقيل هو معطوف على الجنة" Incipit: "الحمد لله الذي وفقنا لحفظ كتابه ووقفنا على الجليل من حكمه واحكامه وآدابه والهمنا بتدبر معانيه ووجوه اعرابه وعرفنا فنون اساليبه من حقيقته ومجازه وايجازه واسهابه احمده على الاعتصام بامتن اسبابه واشهد ان لا اله الا الله وحده لا شريك له" Title from inscription on 'title page' (p.3). Several former owners' marks including that on recto of opening leaf (p.1), large oval seal impression on 'title page' (p.3) and at opening on p.4, poetry and inscriptions on 'title page' (p.3) one of which opens "للشيخ مرشد الدين الفارقي [؟] ..." ; occasional corrections in the hand of the copyist(s) ; a number of short glosses, most of them in the same (difficult) hand with a thin carbon-based ink.
