Notlar About: Careful copy of Ṣadr al-Dīn al-Qūnawī's (d.1274) chief philosophical work, extensively glossed, with preface from Muḥammad ibn Ḥamzah al-Fanārī's commentary Miṣbāḥ al-uns bayna al-maʻqūl wa-al-mashhūd. | Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 993 Origin: Lacks dated colophon ; paper suggests transcription in Egypt, perhaps first decade of the 20th century or shortly after. Eventually bound for James Heyworth-Dunne (d.1974). Former shelfmark: Mich. Isl. Ms. temp. no. 142 Binding: Boards covered in dark green cloth with dark green leather over spine (quarter binding) ; pastedowns and flyleaves in wove paper printed with a floral vegetal pattern in green ; spine gold-stamped with title and decorative accents over raised bands "مفتاح غيب الجمع والوجود | J.H.D." ; sewn in white thread over three recessed cords ; stuck-on endbands (blue and white stripe) ; overall in fairly good condition. Support: Machine laid and wove paper of several types ; opening and later sections (mainly pp.2-56, 141-172) in a machine laid paper with watermarks of arms / scrollwork with seated Britannia under crown (see pp.2, 141, 156, etc.) and "HERTFORDSHIRE MILLS" (see pp.20, 143, etc.) ; other sections on a ruled wove paper (see pp.57-104, 311-340) ; still other sections (see pp.107-140,217-224, 341-372) in a machine wove type with watermarks (in a few instances seeming embossed, see p.114, etc.) of what appears to be a head portrait (bordered in branches with a ribbon) and tuğra / ṭughrā of the sultan ; pp.245-292 in still another type with watermark of "GOUVERNEMENT EGYPTIEN" with star and crescent at center and other smaller crescents with three stars (see pp.246, 258, 262, etc. and compare Walz, "The Paper trade of Egypt and the Sudan," p.91). Decoration: Headings, keywords, symbols, vocalization and glosses rubricated. Script: Naskh ; elegant modern hand in a medium line ; partially but irregularly seriffed with effect of tilt to the left, curvilinear descenders, many open counters, pointing in conjoined dots, final yāʼ usually left unpointed, fully vocalized in some sections ; glosses and closing portions of the matn in ruqʻah. Layout: Written mainly in 9-13 lines per page with gloss in varying number of lines in the margins. Collation: i, 7 II(28), 3 IV(52), V (62), IV (80), 7 II(98), 7 IV(154), V (164), III (170), 2 IV(186), i ; chiefly binions and quaternions ; quire numbering in the form of Hindu-Arabic numerals in pencil in the lower margin of the opening recto of almost every gathering ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization.
