به قلم بری وود [مترجم]، به زبان انگلیسی و فارسی، ترجمه مجموعه ای از نسخه های خطی که در سال 1350 توسط صاحب آن، اصغر منتیر صحاب، در ایران ویرایش و منتشر شد و با عنوان: اعلماء شعله اسماعیل ثعثور منتشر شد. سالهای شکلگیری دراماتیک امپراتوری صفوی (1501–1722) را بازگو میکند که در حافظه عامه ایرانیان توسط داستانسرایان قهوهخانهای حفظ شده و در نسخههای خطی از اواخر قرن هفدهم نوشته شده است. این داستان که از اجداد مقدس صفویان در اردبیل شروع میشود، به فتوحات شاه اسماعیل (ح. 1501-1524) و پیروان فداکار قزلباش در هنگام نبرد با ترکمانها، ازبکها، عثمانیها و حتی گرجیها و اتیوپیهای واقعی مربوط میشود. ترجمه بری وود لحن پرطرفدار و محبوب متن فارسی را به نمایش می گذارد. «ماجراهای شاه اسماعیل» که آمیزهای از تاریخ و افسانه است، نور مهمی بر خودآگاهی تاریخی ایران اواخر دوره صفویه میافکند.
