19th-century Qur’an manuscripts produced in Istanbul and the Ottoman Empire continued many Islamic art traditions, but could not entirely escape the increasing taste for Western aesthetics. The quality of this Qur’an manuscript suggests that it might have been executed for a member of the Imperial household. The radiant opening double-page shows two delicate cartouches with ‘Al Fatiha’ and the beginning of ‘Al Baqara’ set into a majestic framework of gilt floral arabesque cartouches. The main body of the text is executed in finest black naskh, 15 lines to the page, the sura headings written in white riqa' on a solid golden ground. Beyond the gold margins, delicated medallions mark important subdivisions in the text. The last double page shows the end of sura 113 and sura 114 on the right and the dedication page on the left. Both texts are embedded in rectangular panels accentuated with richly gilt and blue ornamentation. Beyond, the entire page is covered with delicate sprays and leaves painted in solid gold.
