TheAcademia Poetica…is a compilation of literary pieces that were read to the assembly of Academia Literaria de Valencia on 13 October 1686 in Valencia to commemorate the recapture of Buda from the Turks.A poetry competition was announced by the Academia Literaria de Valencia in 1686, andAcademia Poetica…contains all the works from the competition. The enthusiasm that spread all over Christian Europe, the importance of the event and the crusade-like feature of the recapture of Buda from the Turks in 1686, were perhaps why such a great number of poetic and epic pieces of literature glorified the event. Most of the works compiled here were read to the festive assemblies of contemporary literary academies, and some of them were published in printed form. The poems glorify Pope Innocent XI, the Emperor Leopold I Habsburg, members of the Sacra Lega, the chief commanders, Charles Duke V of Lorraine and Maximilian II Emanuel the Bavarian Elector, the soldiers, the glorious siege and the decisive day of recapture on 2 September 1686 and the new cardinals nominated on the same day. This beautifully decorated piece is a rare example of illuminated, hand-written literature.

Her main fields of research are 17th-and18th-century Baroque and Rococo: the spectacles, festival decorations and associated iconography – including theatre productions of the period – and interior decoration of historic houses. Since 1988, she has edited a number of art historical books that include some on Oriental art and architecture. She is MWNF DBA’s local (Hungarian) co-ordinator, author and copy-editor.Beatrix BASICS
