The illustration depicts the battle between the Iranian hero Rustam, recognisable by his helmet with a leopard crest and tiger-skin jerkin, and his Turanian adversary Alkus. In this paarticular scene, Rustam has struck the decisive blow, indicating an imminent victory for the Iranians. Nevertheless, the artist Siyavush depicts the battle so dynamically that its course is not yet foreseeable. The two princes, who are observing the carnage from behind the rocks and bite the back of their hands or their fingers in astonishment, are still feverishly following their respective troops, seemingly unsure of victory. The leaf comes from a dispersedShahnama, a Book of Kings made forShahIsmaʿil II (r.Hegira985-986/ AD 1576-1577). The orginal manuscript has been preserved only in a fragmentory state, with just 52 illustrations having been identified to date. Thirteen illustrations alone are the work of the highly esteemed court painter Siyavush, whose signature can be seen on one of the rocks.
