Carpet, flatweave, countered soumak WARP: light brown wool; Z3S; 20 threads per inch (76 per dm). WEFT: Foundation: light brown wool; Z2S; 1 shoot after each row of soumak; 14 shoots per inch (52 per dm). Soumak: wool; Z2S; 10 colours: red, light red, light yellow, green, dark blue, blue, light pink (faded), dark brown, light brown, white; over 4 warp threads and back under 2. SIDE FINISH: returned weft. END FINISH: Lower: incomplete; max. 6 rows of knots 2" (5 cms) deep; Upper: as above. NB. Ends described as displayed. DESIGN: Described as woven. Field: red ground. One row of three large octagonal medallions, the outer dark blue, the inner green. All three contain a blue cross with a light red octagon (the inner medallion has a red octagon surrounded by 8 interlaced knots), the upper and lower hooks, guls and rosettes. Between each medallion is a band of 4 octagons each with an inner star within a rectangle within an outer star. At both ends of the field is a broad bracket and along all 4 edges a diamond-headed pattern with the red reciprocated ground. Scattered across the field are small guls, rosettes, diamonds, 'S' motifs and two men on horseback. Borders: from the inside: (1) blue ground with octagons, each bearing 7 diamonds with, on the lefthand side, 3 crosses and on the right, 2. (2) white ground with dark brown stylized double meander. (3) yellow ground with stars usually containing a swastika both with an octagon inside a rectangle and with each rectangle separated by a nearrow bar. (4) as (2) (5) receiprocal 'running dog' pattern in dark brown and red outlined in yhellow with a small rosettee in the upper righthand corner. Date catalogued: 14.5.97
