Tent band (cut and made into a saddlebag) WARP: white wool with 2 red stripes; Z2S; 46 threads per inch (188 per dm). WEFT: white wool; unable to ascertain spin and twist; 1 shoot after each row of knots; 26 knots per inch (98 per dm). PILE: wool and silk; 6 colours: dark red, light red, yellow, blue, pink (silk), white; symmetrical knot tied around 3 threads with one thread left between each knot; 299 knots per sq. inch (4606 per sq. dm). SIDE FINISH: one cord oversewn with red wool. END FINISH: missing. DESIGN: three sections remain and have been sewn to form a bag. Each is decorated with voided pile. The back is plain weave decorated with bands of two types of sprig. Each face has a central column filled with florets and headed with horns, flanked by a star and another horned motif beneath which is a pattern of triangles. A zigzag border goes down either side. The two faces may originally have formed one rectangular panel in the tent band and the back may have been one of the end panels. Catalogue date: 28.694

Editor (JMA Thompson) writes: "Segment of a Tekke tent band from Merv⦠It is interesting that the camels have two lumps like the Kirgis breed but unlike the single-humped Turkoman camels". The Bokhara tentband is a useful specimen of one of these intereting pieces of work which always comes when complete in such large lengths as would be unsuitable for circulation purposes, however, this is a very suitable size".
