Warp: 2 warps: 1 foundation warp and 1 pile warp Proportion: 4 foundation warps to 1 crimson pile warp, 2 foundation warps to 1 green pile warp. Foundation warp: Material: silk, white, S twist. Thread count: 80 foundation warps per cm Velvet Warp: Material: Silk, green and red, S twist. Thread count: 15 pile warps per cm Description: cut, voided and brocaded velvet. The design is one of repeating row of ogilval lattices. This piece has been pieced together from many smaller pieces. Weft: 4 wefts: 1 foundation weft, 1 squeezing weft, 1 supporting weft, 1 brocading weft. Proportion: 2 foundation wefts, 1 rod, 1 supplementary supporting weft, 1 supplementary squeezing weft, 2 metal brocading threads. Foundation weft: Material: cotton, white, Z twist, doubled. Thread count: 18 foundation wefts per cm Squeezing weft: Materials: silk, white, S twist, very thin. Thread count: 9 squeezing wefts per cm Supporting weft: Materials: silk, white, S twist, very thin. Thread count: 9 squeezing wefts per cm Brocading Weft: Materal: silk, white and yellow (when the design requires it), 2 ply, S twist. Metal threads are wound on the silk core in an S direction. Bound in a 4/1 twill, S direction. Two per pile unit. Thread count: 18 metal brocading threads per cm. Selvedge: 5 end satin. The inventory at the V&A refers to the colours as being crimson red and green. However, the green has been documented for this analysis as yellow as this is how it appears to the analyst.
