Caucasian carpet. WARP: two shades of brown wool plied together; Z3S and sometimes Z2S; 17 threads per inch (67 per dm), WEFT: white cotton and white wool plied together; Z3S, 1 wool and 2 cotton; 2 shoots after each row of knots; 9-10 knots per inch (38 per dm). PILE: wool; 13 colours: red (with marked abrash), yellow, dark green, green, dark blue, blue, light blue, dark purple, light purple (faded), dark brown, light brown, black, white; symmetrical knot tied around 2 threds; average 81 knots per sq. inch (1273 per sq. dm). SIDE FINISH: one cord oversewn with white wool and cotton mixed. END FINISH: Lower: incomplete with max. of 5 rows of soumak with the weft and evidence of plainweave with brown wool. Upper: incomplete but with evidence of 3 rows of soumak with white wool only. DESIGN: Field: dark blue ground with four linked, stepped lozenges which contain stylised blossoms on stems emerging from a central hexagon. Ground covered with guls, hooked diamonds and small squares, etc.. Main border: red ground decorated with varied and elaborate S-motifs. The ground has florets scattered across it. Innermost border: yellow ground with stepped crosses in various colours. Inner border: light blue ground, changes to blue towards the top and along the bottom with a fine dark meander in the lowest bit and a twisting ribbon in the remainder. Outer border: (along the bottom) white ground with small coloured guls. (Along the sides and the top) a coloured square alternating with a plain square which has usually been divided into 3 or 4 segments. NB. The main border. The field design is different byt the weft (1 wool + 2 cotton plied together) and the knot count (1260 per sq. dm) are the same.
