Border for the top of a tent-entrance, of pile carpet, knotted in dyed and undyed wool on woollen warps. WARP: white wool; Z2S; 25 threads to the inch (96 per dm). WEFT: light brown wool; Z spun, unplied; 2 threads per shoot and 2 shoots after each row of knots; 18 knots to the inch (72 per dm). PILE: wool; 8 colours: dark red, light red, yellow, dark green, dark blue, blue, dark brown, white; asymmetrical knot, open to the right and tied around 2 warp threads; 225 knots to the sq. inch (3456 per sq. dm). SIDE FINISH: both outer sides have 2 end cords with symmetrical 4-ply knotting - elsewhere 2-ply; all 4 sides have a single cord oversewn with dark blue wool. END FINISH: lower has 2.5 cms. plain weave with red weft and then cream wool weft; immediately after the pile is a band of chevron oversewing - the back is covered by the band - probably weft-twined; at both corners is a 13 cms. double plaited, knotted braid, one in pink and blue, the other in pink and green. The upper centre has 2.5 cms. plain weave with red weft and then cream, turned and stitched in place. A heavy cord of brown wool is stitched along the fold and from it hangs a long fringe, 48 cm. max, in 6 cms. widths of dark blue, dark red, dark green and light red. Aboive and immediately below the pile is another fringe of the same colours and length, knotted around 4 warps; the 2 fringes combine and there is evidence of white cotton and yellow wool end tassels. Pendant ends: one row of symmetrical knots over 4 warp threads form a fringe of 66 cms. in the colours of the central fringe; there follows a 1.5 cm. plain weave with cream weft turned and stitched in place; between the pile and the fringe, along the fold, there is oversewing with blue wool. DESIGN: field: the top and both pendants have a white ground; the top has a design of two bands of nine serrated leaves with a central angular curl in a contrasting colour; upper and lower leaves are paired by a linked stem which frames a similar, smaller dark red leaf or a light red stepped lozenge, both containing a curl and both flanked by narrow triangles. On the pendants the above design becomes a foliate meander with smaller secondary motifs. Main border: a white ground with a barred motif outlined in dark red and dark brown. Outer border: dark red ground with white diamonds alternating with paired intruding triangles. Pendant points: a dark red ground with white blocks outlines the V-shape; within is a white ground with dark red blocks and within these V-shaped borders is a multi-coloured triangle. Extra centre band with dark red ground and white florets. Extra upper band: reciprocal horned motif in red and dark blue with white florets. Catalogue date: 21.2.95
